Overview of Crisis Prevention Introduction Crisis is defined as a precipitating event, followed by the perception of the event leading to anguish, next is the presence of reduced functioning of an individual which isn’t alleviated by normal coping mechanisms (Puleo McGlothlin, 2014). There are many events an individual can experience that can lead to the inability to function such as hurricanes, fires, sexual assaults, suicides, or any other situation where immediate loss/assault has occurred. After a crisis occurs, a counselor has ethical/cultural considerations, responsibilities, and understandings of how to assess the individual following a crisis. Ethical Standards There are several ethical standards that must be upheld when working with an individual during a crisis. The 2014 American Counseling Association Code of Ethics sets forth guidelines/rules for counselors to use when working with any client. The ACA (2014) speaks of the clients right to privacy which is especially needed when working with those who are survivors of sexual assault or intimate partner violence (Standard B.1.b.). Similarly, confidentiality such as keeping the client’s information private unless the client is a danger to oneself or others is equally important (Standard B.1.c.). In a world without law or order, fear can lead to savagery and bring out the worst of people. Such a world can destroy a person both physically and mentally. Humans would live in chaos and civilization would be lost. We see this portrayed in the William Goldings infamous novel, Lord of the Flies, when the horrendous crash of an airplane penetrates the islands serenity and disrupts the air with the crackling sounds of the blazing fire. William Golding uses the beast to return the boys of the island to their primal instincts, contributing to his commentary on human nature. The beast symbolizes the growing fear that lies dormant, deep in the children’s souls and turns the boys into uncivilized beings. By instilling fear, the uncivilized behavior is drawn out of the boys and slowly turns them into savages. The political fight that occurred in the Senate by determined Southern Democrats will forever remain as one of the greatest legislative showdowns in American history. After passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964 however, no longer could segregation be legal or tolerated. In public places the rights of a black person were to be equal to that of a white person. In employment, blacks, minorities, and women could not be discriminated against. The federal government cut off funds to any business, educational institution, state or local government that practiced racial discrimination. To enforce the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the law also stated that the United States Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were to intervene in situations in the South where blacks continued to be denied civil rights. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 not only changed the United States on a social level but politically too. This bill set the precedent for using a cloture to stop a filibuster in the Senate. Similar cloture votes in 1966 and 1968, with bills for equal voting rights and guaranteed equal housing respectively were used to stop Southern filibusters. The Civil Rights Act also proved that mass demonstration and peaceful protesting are heard in Washington D.C. Martin Luther King and the Leadership Conference started with nothing and achieved everything. From the segregated South those who fought for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 changed the course of American history and ridded the nation of inequality under the law.

Argument and Parody in T.S. Eliots Four Quartets Essay -- T.S. Eliot

The Seduction of Argument and the Danger of Parody in T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets Though its more lyrical passages present detailed and evocative imagery, substantial portions of T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets afford no such easy approach. Since the initial appearance of "Burnt Norton" it has been a critical commonplace to regard these portions of the text as at once its most conceptually profound and its most formally prosaic. Of course, the Quartets offer enough cues toward this critical attitude that it may fairly be said to reside within the poem at least as much as it is imposed from without. As the text of the poem itself apparently gives license to the view that its "poetry does not matter," the preponderance of critical attention to the Quartets' non-lyrical passages has been devoted to philosophical and theological paraphrase of its argument, to explicating the system of belief or thought behind the words. Meanwhile, relatively little attention has been paid to the working of the poetry itself, to the construction of the presumed meaning, in these "discursive " or "conceptual" passages. Seduced by the desire for a systematic argument, criticism has overestimated these passages' straightforwardness and largely neglected their ambiguity and indeterminacy. The seductive voice of argument – which is already a voice within the poem – invites conceptual scrutiny but repels formal analysis; it displaces the concerns of "poetry" in order to work its poetry undetected. I will be reading critically several critical discussions, but always in the belief that the criticism's concerns are not projected onto the poem from without, but express the critical voices within the poem.
